“Gaye Adegbaloa and the Wild Rutz” .............................................................
. For me, vocals make a song. Resa's voice has always possessed a bone-chilling goodness, a magic that's rare and special. Again, it is showcased in this CD. However, what I find truly exciting is that here the vocals of Miles and Jackie also shine. I have never heard them better: clear, resonant, confident and full of conviction.
Many music lovers, and blues fans in particular, do not know the nuances of various blues forms. To appreciate the Piedmont style, enjoy the blues of M.S.G. Acoustic Blues Trio. For sure Piedmont legends John Cephas, Etta Baker, and Archie Edwards are smiling down. Their souls are contained in "The Flood."
For many years, M.S.G. has been my favorite blues group. However, with "The Flood," M.S.G. has stepped up its game. Grammy award winner, Cathy Fink, is at the helm as producer. My favorite harp player, Phil Wiggins, my favorite bass player, Ralph Gordon, and my favorite rising star, Sam Gleaves, give M.S.G. added musical dimensions.
For me, for a recording to be great, it must have great songs. "The Flood" has songs by some great writers: Son House, John Prine, Fats Domino, Piedmont legend Archie Edwards. However, M.S.G. has contributed 8 of the 15 songs -- created by using traditional blues forms to tell contemporary stories. While M.S.G. has been my favorite group, Jackie and Miles (and Miles' writing partner, David Byrd) are now creating some of my favorite songs. I cannot get "My Old Ride" out of my head.
